New Year's Resolution

I have been thinking for the last few weeks about what I should make as my NYR. I don't really like to make them because I never keep them anyway! Of course the one I make every year is to lose weight, but that's an life long process so I guess it doesn't really count. Then I decided to make one to drink more water. Maybe for once I will actually keep my NYR! I drink about 10 cups of coffee per day, so I am going to try to cut it down to like ohhhh 8 or 9 and mix in a couple of bottles of water here and there.

So pondering this thought this morning, I decided that my NYR is going to be to try to enjoy life more. I think a lot of times, we get so bogged down with our daily routines that we forget to enjoy ourselves. We only live this life once and we need to make the best of it! Even if that means skipping the gym to grab a drink with a friend, or ordering the quesadilla instead of a salad, or buying that expensive dress even though you have no where to wear it! As my wise friend Jenny once said "Life is short – need to enjoy it. Looking back at your life you are not going to remember your workouts. You remember your good times with your loved ones."

So please remember life is a gift. Have fun, stay positive, and enjoy your life and your loved ones as much as possible!

6 Cancer Fighting Superfoods

by Leslie Barrie courtesy of yahoo.com

To reduce your risk of cancer, look no further than your fridge. "All the studies on cancer and nutrition point to eating plant-based foods for their phytonutrients and other special compounds," says Richard Béliveau, PhD, chair in the prevention and treatment of cancer at the University of Québec at Montreal and author of Foods to Fight Cancer.

Aim for five to nine daily servings of all kinds of fruits and vegetables—especially these six superstars.

Broccoli
All cruciferous veggies (think cauliflower, cabbage, kale) contain cancer-fighting properties, but broccoli is the only one with a sizable amount of sulforaphane, a particularly potent compound that boosts the body's protective enzymes and flushes out cancer-causing chemicals, says Jed Fahey, ScD. A recent University of Michigan study on mice found that sulforaphane also targets cancer stem cells—those that aid in tumor growth.

Helps fight: breast, liver, lung, prostate, skin, stomach, and bladder cancers

Your Rx: The more broccoli, the better, research suggests—so add it wherever you can, from salads to omelets to the top of your pizza.

Berries
All berries are packed with cancer-fighting phytonutrients. But black raspberries, in particular, contain very high concentrations of phytochemicals called anthocyanins, which slow down the growth of premalignant cells and keep new blood vessels from forming (and potentially feeding a cancerous tumor), according to Gary D. Stoner, PhD, a professor of internal medicine at The Ohio State University College of Medicine.

Helps fight: colon, esophageal, oral, and skin cancers

Your Rx: Stoner uses a concentrated berry powder in his studies but says a half-cup serving of berries a day may help your health, too.

Tomatoes
This juicy fruit is the best dietary source of lycopene, a carotenoid that gives tomatoes their red hue, Béliveau says. And that's good news, because lycopene was found to stop endometrial cancer cell growth in a study in Nutrition and Cancer. Endometrial cancer causes nearly 8,000 deaths a year.

Helps fight: endometrial, lung, prostate, and stomach cancers

Your Rx: The biggest benefits come from cooked tomatoes (think pasta sauce!), since the heating process increases the amount of lycopene your body is able to absorb.

Walnuts
Their phytosterols (cholesterol-like molecules found in plants) have been shown to block estrogen receptors in breast cancer cells, possibly slowing the cells' growth, says Elaine Hardman, PhD, associate professor at Marshall University School of Medicine in Huntington, West Virginia.

Helps fight: breast and prostate cancers

Your Rx: Munching on an ounce of walnuts a day may yield the best benefits, Hardman's research found.

Garlic
Phytochemicals in garlic have been found to halt the formation of nitrosamines, carcinogens formed in the stomach (and in the intestines, in certain conditions) when you consume nitrates, a common food preservative, Béliveau says. In fact, the Iowa Women's Health Study found that women with the highest amounts of garlic in their diets had a 50 percent lower risk of certain colon cancers than women who ate the least.

Helps fight: breast, colon, esophageal, and stomach cancers

Your Rx: Chop a clove of fresh, crushed garlic (crushing helps release beneficial enzymes), and sprinkle it into that lycopene-rich tomato sauce while it simmers.

Beans
A study out of Michigan State University found that black and navy beans significantly reduced colon cancer incidence in rats, in part because a diet rich in the legumes increased levels of the fatty acid butyrate, which in high concentrations has protective effects against cancer growth. Another study, in the journal Crop Science, found dried beans particularly effective in preventing breast cancer in rats.

Helps fight: breast and colon cancers

Your Rx: Add a serving—a half-cup—of legumes a few times a week (either from a can or dry beans that've been soaked and cooked) to your usual rotation of greens or other veggies.

Holiday Breakfast Recipe

Frittata!

We all know the Holidays are filled with heavy and calorific (I think I just made up a word) food. So it's important to sneak in a healthy meal where you can! I Love this as a breakfast recipe, but you can also eat it for lunch or dinner. The great thing about the frittata is that's it's so versatile, you can pretty much add anything you want! Here is the basic recipe I use, it is super simple and healthy!

Ingredients
1 cup egg whites
2 cups spinach
1/2 cup chopped mushrooms
1 shallot
salt and pepper
fat free feta (they have it at Trader Joe's)

1. Turn oven on broil, let preheat.
2. In an ovenproof skillet or pan (I use 10in), saute the shallots in cooking spray until soft over medium heat.
3. Add in mushrooms and saute until soft.
4. Add in spinach and cook it down (takes about 20 seconds).
5. Salt and pepper to taste.

6. Remove mixture from pan and let cool for about 5 minutes.
7. Whip up egg whites a little bit and then add veggie mixture.
8. Spray pan with cooking spray and pour in the egg and veggie mixture (don't stir or move it around too much).
9. Place over low heat, loosening the edges every couple minutes.
10. When the frittata is almost set (still has uncooked egg whites only on top), sprinkle feta on top and place under broiler for 2-3 minutes or until set.
11. Let sit for 5 minutes, cut and enjoy! It's best to cut it into wedges, like a pizza.

Note: You CAN add breadcrumbs to the top before you place in under the broiler. I skip it because it's less carbs but do whatever you fancy!

Hope everyone has a great Christmas!
xoxo

Things That Annoy Me

And I know I am not the only one. I don't like to complain, but I thought maybe this would help some people (even though probably only 5 people actually read this blog) if they are guilty of making these mistakes.

It's not meant to be offensive, it's all in the name of proper etiquette! Here is just 2 scenarios. I will post more as they come to me :)

1. The mistake: Skipping an introduction. You don't introduce friends to other friends (or acquaintances).

Why it's wrong: Well for starters it's rude and you make your friends feel uncomfortable. Also, if you introduce them (sometimes I like to throw in something they have in common with each other), they are more likely to strike up a conversation with one another and that means you don't have to babysit!

Example: "Melissa, this is my friend Heather, we know each other from work. Heather loves to play Tennis too, do you two belong to the same club?"

2. The mistake: Not responding to invitations (RSVP).

Why it's wrong: When you don't reply, the host is left wondering whether or not you'll come. The host is updating her (let's face it, it's most likely a woman hosting) excel spreadsheet everyday, so don't think she's forgotten about you. She is most likely wondering if you're waiting for something better to come up than her event. You also need to be cognizant of the fact that parties take A LOT of planning, and its imperative to the planning process to know how many guests will be attending.

So please get your act together and RSVP promptly when you receive an invitation. If your plans are in limbo, don't go radio silent on the host until the last minute. Let her know ahead of time that you have you have a few things going on and you're not 100% sure if you will make it or not. She will be appreciative and be able to plan accordingly.

The #1 etiquette rule- NEVER EVER show up without responding. If the invitation asks you to RSVP, then RSVP. It's not that difficult.

Fun Fact: RSVP stands for a French phrase, "répondez, s'il vous plaît," which means "please reply."

Why Do Guys Wear Boardshorts to the Gym?

I have been asking myself this question for years! I seriously don't understand what would inspire a guy to wear his swim trunks to work out. I figure it must be lack of something better to wear.

Reasons guys should not wear boardshorts to the gym:

1. Ummm, they are ugly. Most of the time guys are wearing balooning boardshorts with flower prints on them. Sooo out of style. If you are going to wear boardshorts, at least wear fitted ones and please no patterns.

2. They have no support, if you know what I mean. I don't know what it's like to have something hanging between my legs, but I can imagine it's not comfortable to have things moving around while working out. Ew.

3. Chaffing?

4. You just look stupid! Boardshorts are made for the beach or pool, not the gym. Please go to spend $40 and purchase some athletic shorts!

Nike Dri-FIT Training Shorts- $35 at Nordstrom

Obviously these training shorts are much more stylish for the gym, but most importantly, they have functionality!

What To Get Your Guy for Christmas

Or any guy for that matter. They can be kind of hard to shop for, and when you ask them what they want, they say "hmmmmm I dunno." Luckily for us girls, we actually listen to what they say and that gives us clues into the things they like.

There are 3 main categories when it comes to shopping for men:

1. Electronics
2. Clothes & Accessories
3. Tools

I personally think these are the most popular, but there are also other things like music and sports. You know your guy best, so be sure to think about his interests.

Here are some gift ideas for the 3 main categories:

1. Bose IE2 Audio Headphones- supposedly the best on the market

Apple Ipad or any electronic tablet

Xbox Kinect (good gift if you want your man to go radio silent for hours at a time)

(no link as I haven't the slightest clue where to get it, Amazon.com?)

2. Sweaters

Designer Jeans

Athletic Gear

Holy grail of accessories- Rolex Submariner Watch (For all the ballers out there)

3. Tools

I HAVE NO IDEA. Ask someone at Home Depot.

Bootie Pies

I can't stop laughing! Am I the only one who finds these boots hilarious? They are branded as boots you where to get a pedicure! Bahahahahahaha, so ridiculous!

Not only are they hideously ugly, they are not really functional. I guess you can put them on before the painting happens, but what happens when you take them off? And what is the point of trying to keep half of your foot warm when your toes are exposed to the elements?

Apparently, they are actually endorsed by celebrities like Scarlett Johannsen and Jennifer Hudson. Will celebrities endorse anything these days? And I have never actually seen any celeb wearing them.

$128. For that I would rather by REAL Uggs and have the nail salon put seran wrap on my toes if they're not all the way dry (I am sure you all know that trick, it works like a charm).

Delicious Discovery

It's about 20 degrees outside and for some reason, I am craving ice cream. Maybe it's because I weigh 400lbs at heart ;) So, I went into the store looking for a healthy treat (yes, they actually exist) and I found these in the freezer section! There were these skinny cow ice cream sandwiches and also individual 1 cup chocolate ice creams. I opted for the sandwich and it was SO good. I have found my new favorite treat!

They are really tasty, healthy and satisfying. Pretty much the perfect snack because they are delicious and you won't feel guilty. They only have 140 calories and 1.5 grams of fat. That's less than half of the calories of a candy bar and like 10x less fat. Much better choice!

Next time I am craving something sweet, I will try the ice cream. I am sure it is just as delicious!
